Germany Crossing the Road in Germany 28 January 2025 Since my arrival in Germany, I had occasionally pondered how to properly cross the road here. Oddly enough, I only decided to sort this out properly last week. I frequently observed Germans crossing the road away from pedestrian crossings, quite unlike what we were accustomed to in Russia, and most often this happens simply because there isn't a pedestrian crossing available. Indeed, in many places, there simply isn't one provided. When my friends and I followed the Germans' example and crossed the road just as they did, in places with no pedestrian crossing, we would nervously glance around to check whether any police cars were nearby. As it turned out, we needn't have worried about the police presence: if there's no pedestrian crossing nearby, you're allowed to cross the road anywhere. The main rule is that you mustn't obstruct traffic. This means you should wait until there are no cars nearby before crossing. Makes sense, really. If there is a crossing specifically designated for pedestrians nearby (with appropriate road markings and, if you're lucky, traffic lights), then you must use it. In summary, you can cross the road anywhere, provided there are no special barriers and the traffic situation permits it. Copyright (c) 2025 contact@renecoignard.com Powered by Weblog v1.18.6
